Rutgers Honors College Virtual Map

Vector Illustration

Because of Covid-19, most classes and activities at Rutgers University in the fall semester of 2020 would be held virtually. The Honors College prides itself on providing a strong sense of place, community, and belonging for its students, so its leaders wanted to provide a virtual space that offered the same atmosphere in the absence of in-person connections.

I built a custom vector environment showing cutaways of the classrooms and student-friendly spaces to provide an online home base for students who, for the first semester in the history of the Honors College, couldn’t inhabit the spaces in person.

This was the final illustration. I’m so proud of how this turned out!

Which part took the longest time out of the components on this project? Surprisingly, it was creating the students. I invested a lot of time into showing a diverse range of skin colors, body types, and clothing styles. We wanted to show activity in each of the classrooms and common spaces.

All the vectors were created so arms, legs, or torsos could pivot in the most natural way achievable with a simple HTML rotation. Here they all are – a total of 23!
